Everything from pricing to preparation, what to expect at your appointment, and our policy if no wax is found. If your question isn’t here, just give us a call.
Does microsuction hurt?
+
No. Microsuction is generally painless. You will hear a noise during the procedure as the suction works close to the eardrum, and some people find it slightly ticklish, but it should not be painful.
How long does the appointment take?
+
The procedure itself usually takes 5–15 minutes. Allow 20–30 minutes total for your first appointment including the ear check.
How much does it cost?
+
£50 for one ear or £70 for both ears. There are no hidden fees. If we examine your ears and find no significant wax, the clinician will discuss this with you before proceeding.
Do I need a GP referral?
+
No. You can book directly online or by phone with no referral needed.
How do I prepare for my appointment?
+
We recommend using olive oil spray (such as Earol) in each ear twice a day for 2–3 days before your appointment. This softens the wax and makes removal more effective.
Where can I buy olive oil spray?
+
Olive oil sprays are available over the counter at Timperley Late Night Pharmacy and most other pharmacies. Earol is a popular brand.
Should I use cotton buds?
+
No. Cotton buds push wax further into the ear canal and can damage the eardrum. They are one of the most common causes of impacted wax.
Can children have microsuction?
+
Yes, but the suitability is assessed on the day. Children must be able to sit still during the procedure. Please contact us before booking for under-5s.
Is microsuction safe for hearing aid users?
+
Yes, and we particularly recommend it for hearing aid users as keeping ear canals clear helps your devices work properly.
How often will I need it?
+
It varies. Some people need it once a year, others every few months. Hearing aid users and people who use earphones a lot tend to need more frequent appointments.
What if I have a perforated eardrum?
+
Microsuction is one of the safest methods for people with a history of perforated eardrums because it does not use water. Please tell the clinician before the procedure.
Why not just use ear syringing?
+
Modern audiology no longer recommends syringing. It carries a higher risk of infection, dizziness and eardrum damage. Microsuction is safer, drier and more comfortable.
Can I drive after the appointment?
+
Yes. There is no anaesthetic or sedation. You can drive, work and continue your day as normal straight after.
