Is microsuction ear wax removal painful?
Microsuction is normally painless. You hear a vacuum-like sound and may feel a brief sensation as wax is removed, but it does not hurt. Most people find it more comfortable than ear syringing.
Short answer
No — microsuction is not painful for the vast majority of patients. The clinician uses a fine medical suction tube and a bright light. You stay sitting upright and can speak during the procedure.
What you will feel
- A vacuum-cleaner-like sound, which can be louder than you expect.
- A small tugging or whoosh as the wax lifts away.
- A quick, settled-feeling once the canal is clear.
If you have an ear infection or recent surgery
Tell the clinician at the start. If your ear is currently inflamed, the appointment may be paused and a different plan recommended (for example olive-oil drops for a few more days, or referral). The aim is always to keep the appointment comfortable and safe.
Children and microsuction
Children from about age 5 usually tolerate microsuction well, particularly if a parent sits next to them. We will not proceed if a child is upset; we keep the room calm and friendly.
