Can children have ear wax removed at the pharmacy?

What ages do you see?

We typically see children from around age 5. We do not see children under 5: at that age the ear canal is small and sitting still is a big ask, so the GP is the right route. Every child appointment starts with the pharmacist looking in the ear and assessing whether microsuction is suitable that day. If it is not, we say so honestly and explain what to do next rather than pressing on. Is microsuction safe for children?

Microsuction is a safe, widely used method when performed by a trained clinician. Nothing is flushed into the ear (there is no water involved, unlike syringing) and the clinician works under direct vision with a bright light, using a fine suction tube to lift the wax away. With children we work at the child's pace: if a child cannot stay still or becomes upset, we stop. We never restrain a child, and we never promise that the wax will come out at a given visit. Most blockages are cleared in one visit; occasionally a second visit, or a few more days of softening drops first, is the better plan, and with wriggly younger ears that is more common.

Will it hurt?

Microsuction is usually well tolerated, including by children. The suction makes a vacuum-cleaner-like sound that is louder than most children expect; for many kids the noise is the strangest part, not any discomfort. They may feel a tickle or a brief tugging sensation as the wax lifts away. Your child sits upright in a normal chair, you stay right next to them, and they can raise a hand at any time if they want us to pause.

How can I prepare my child?

• Talk about the noise first. Tell them it sounds like a tiny vacuum cleaner near the ear and that it is over quickly. Children who know what to expect cope far better.
• Soften the wax. Olive oil drops (or Earol spray) for 3–5 days before the appointment usually make removal easier and quicker. It is not strictly required, but with children it genuinely helps. See our preparation guide. Do not use drops if your child has grommets, a perforated eardrum, or any discharge from the ear — speak to the pharmacist or your GP first.
• Pick a calm time of day. We are open Mon–Sat 9am–9pm and Sunday 9am–6pm, so it is easy to avoid the school rush and choose a quieter slot. There is free parking directly outside the pharmacy, which keeps the trip simple.

When is the GP the right route instead?

We will point you to your GP rather than book your child in when any of the following apply:

• Your child is under 5.
• There is ear pain, discharge or a suspected ear infection, which needs a medical review, not wax removal.
• Your child has grommets or has had previous ear surgery.

Being upfront about this matters more with children than with anyone else. We also do not offer hearing tests or audiology, so if you are worried about your child's hearing beyond a wax blockage, ask your GP about a children's hearing assessment. Wax-related symptoms often improve once wax is removed, but hearing concerns should still be checked properly.

Do all ear wax clinics see children?

No. Many high-street providers treat adults only, or set a higher minimum age. If you are comparing clinics, check the age policy before you book so you are not turned away on the day. Ours is simple: from around age 5, always subject to the pharmacist's assessment.

How much does it cost, and how do we book?

Prices are flat: £50 for one ear and £70 for both, the same in the evenings and at weekends, with no hidden fees. If the pharmacist looks in and finds no significant wax, they will discuss it with you before anything goes ahead. No GP referral is needed and same-day appointments are often available.
